Getting ready

Do beginners need a special room or equipment?

Shops sell cushions, mats and gadgets, and you wonder whether you need any of it.

You do not need a special room or equipment to meditate. A chair, a few quiet minutes and your breath are enough to begin.

You also do not need to say yes to every class, retreat or gadget that crosses your feed. This page shows a no-purchase start and the costs worth noticing.

What do I actually need?

Only three things: somewhere to sit, a short stretch of time and your own attention. Sit on a dining chair, the edge of a bed or a folded towel on the floor.

For timing, use the clock on your phone or our meditation timer, which runs in your browser and keeps what you type on your device.

Try this: a full no-purchase session

  1. Sit on a chair with both feet on the floor. Let your hands rest on your lap.
  2. Set a timer for three minutes.
  3. Close your eyes, or rest your gaze softly on the floor.
  4. Feel the breath at your nose, chest or belly.
  5. When your mind wanders, say “wandering” and return.
  6. When the timer ends, take one slow breath and carry on.

That is a real practice, and it has cost you nothing.

What are the costs that are not on the price tag?

When something is described as free, look at what sits around it. Entry may cost nothing while the rest does not:

  • Transport: fares, petrol, toll and parking to get there and back.
  • Data: an online session uses your mobile data unless you have Wi-Fi.
  • Membership: a trial may lead to a paid plan, so read the terms yourself before agreeing.
  • Time: travel, queues and the session itself may take more hours than they seem.

Terms change, so check the current details with the provider before you plan around any of this.

For the app we mention on this site, the App Store listing describes Miracle of Mind as free to download1, which is the provider’s own description. Data and time still apply.

How do I say no to a plan I cannot take up?

You can turn down an invitation without explaining your money or your week. Change the words below so they sound like you:

  • “Thank you for thinking of me. It does not fit this time. Let us catch up soon.”
  • “I am saving my weekends for rest right now. I would love to hear how it went.”
  • “Maybe next month. I will message you.”

You are not being rude. You are keeping a promise to yourself, and a short sit at home still counts.

If cost is a worry, this page is not budgeting advice. Talk to someone you trust, or look at finding suitable support for local help.

Adapting it to your home

In a small flat, a corner of the sofa is a meditation room. In a house full of people, a closed bathroom door buys two minutes. At a desk, a chair pushed back from the screen will do.

Where next?

Read when and where to meditate to find a moment. See other practical resources on this site if you want no app at all. Compare options in choosing between an app and an in-person introduction.

The meditation for beginners hub gathers the rest.

A phone and a chair are enough, and Sadhguru's free seven-minute guided meditation needs no special room.

Common questions

Do I need a cushion, mat or special clothes?

No. A chair, the edge of your bed or a folded towel on the floor is enough. Wear whatever you already have on, as long as you can breathe comfortably. If a cushion later makes sitting easier, you can add one then, not before.

Can I meditate without spending anything?

Yes. Sit on a chair, rest your attention on your breath for a few minutes, and use the timer on your phone or our browser timer. Nothing needs to be bought, downloaded or booked. That is a complete practice.

What costs should I check before saying yes to a class or app?

Check more than the price. Ask about transport and parking, mobile data, any membership or later fees, and how much time it takes. A session that is free to enter can still cost money in fares and hours. Decide with the full picture.

How do I say no to a meditation event without feeling bad?

Be kind and short: thank them, say it does not fit right now, and offer to catch up another way. You owe no long explanation. Declining one plan does not close the door, and a short sit at home is still a good start.
